Ethanol- A Subsidy For Grain Farmers?
Reports predict that over one third of the US corn crop for 2008 is destined for ethanol production. This is good news for the cash crop sector, but very bad news for livestock producers.
Bush's ethanol program is very flawed scientifically, but is it flawed politically? Consider these facts:
The Bush ethanol program covers these three bases. The cash crop sector no longer needs subsidization due to artificially high grain prices. This is even more brilliant than when Reagan paid farmers not to produce in the 80's.
The public perception of ethanol is that it relieves dependence on foreign oil and that it is better for the environment. Neither is true but the Republicans are happy because they think they have trumped the middle east, and the Democrats are happy because they can tank up their Subarus with what they think is greener fuel.
All bases covered and nobody the wiser!
